Behind the look: Carlos Domord at Pitti Uomo 107

At the most recent Pitti Uomo 107, creative director and style aficionado Carlos Domord embodied modern elegance with a monochromatic suit and overcoat in grey. A suit and overcoat crafted from the same fabric always create a striking effect. We have done this before for the previous winter Pitti, featuring a suit and coat in herringbone but in a warm beige color palette. This time, however, Carlos opted for cool grey tones, bringing a contemporary twist to the look.

The choice of fabric—Holland & Sherry’s herringbone from the Sherry Tweed book—played a crucial role in defining the look’s rich texture and depth. This 100% lambswool fabric, woven with a balance of black, white, and grey threads, creates a dynamic pattern, ideal for winter dressing. With a weight of 340gm, it offers the right balance between warmth and wearability, making it a perfect choice for layering.

The Monochromatic Suit and Coat Trend

Pairing a suit with an overcoat in the same fabric has emerged as a defining trend in modern tailoring. This approach creates a cohesive, polished look that highlights the fabric’s texture and depth. While contrasting coats can add variety, matching sets exude a deliberate and sophisticated style, perfect for both formal and smart-casual occasions.

Styling

A monochromatic suit and coat combination is highly versatile. For a sharp, business-ready appearance, pair it with a crisp white shirt, a tonal tie, and polished leather shoes. For a more relaxed take, follow Carlos’ styling approach by layering knitwear underneath. His choice of black accessories—beltloafers, and sunglasses—harmonized with the black buttons on the suit and coat, reinforcing the outfit’s refined yet understated appeal.

Beyond wearing them together, the grey herringbone suit and overcoat shine as versatile separates in a gentleman’s wardrobe. The suit jacket pairs effortlessly with dark denim or flannel trousers for a refined smart-casual look, while the overcoat is a staple in itself, complementing a variety of outfits.

Layer it over a chunky knit sweater and tailored wool trousers for an elegant off-duty aesthetic, or wear it with a roll-neck and pleated chinos for a sophisticated city-ready look. Thanks to its classic pattern and neutral tones, the grey herringbone fabric integrates seamlessly into a variety of styles and suits, making it a worthwhile investment for any modern wardrobe.

Whether worn in a professional setting or styled more casually, a matching suit and overcoat in a textured fabric like herringbone is a timeless investment. It’s a look that speaks to both classic elegance and contemporary sophistication.
